REGISTER-PAJARONIAN Investigation into murder of Capitola teen continues CAPITOLA - Investigators say they have multiple leads and numerous contacts, but still no clear motive in Tuesday's fatal shooting of a Capitola teen. Meanwhile, a donation fund has been established to help the victim's family with funeral costs. "I guess you could say that I'm still feeling cautiously optimistic at this point," Capitola Police Chief Richard Ehle said on Thursday afternoon. "We've got all of our resources on this case and we want to keep the momentum going through the weekend." Joseph Ray Morales, 19, was gunned down in the doorway of his family's apartment off Capitola Road around 11 p.m. Tuesday while he was talking to an unknown male suspect who'd knocked on the front door. The victim's stepfather said he saw two subjects running, right after the shooting, from the scene toward Capitola Road where they hopped into a white sedan, similar to a Ford Taurus, and fled. With the help of witness descriptions, police were able to develop a sketch of one of the two suspects, but have little information on the second suspect - who they believe was the shooter - except that he was dressed in dark clothing. "The suspect who knocked on the door has been described as looking very young, with a baby face, about 5-foot-6 to 5-8, wearing a blue baseball cap, a white sweatshirt or puffy jacket and dark pants," Ehle said. "He's either Caucasian or light-skinned Hispanic." Ehle said early investigation points to a handgun, likely a revolver, as the murder weapon, but that won't be confirmed until after the autopsy report is completed. At this point, he said, detectives are looking to develop additional witnesses and names with the help of the public. "Unless you've got a named suspect, a lot of times it's really the community's help that makes these cases and helps us solve them," Ehle said. "That's why we want the public to know how important it is for them to come |
